The permit calendar is the thing to settle first. Snug Harbor's Chinese Scholar's Garden has blackout days early in the week, and the two permit tiers buy different access — $150 for the gardens and grounds, $350 with the Scholar's Garden included. If that garden matters to you, it constrains the date, not the other way round.
Distances work in your favour here in a way they do not in Brooklyn or Queens. Getting-ready, ceremony, portraits and reception can genuinely sit within fifteen minutes of one another, and parking exists. That is worth twenty or thirty minutes of found time across a day, and the best use of it is portraits rather than a longer cocktail hour.
Guest travel is the counterweight. Anyone coming from Manhattan, Brooklyn or Long Island is dealing with either the Verrazzano or the ferry, and both are unpredictable at weekends. Give guests a later arrival buffer than the map suggests, and tell your vendors the same.
Light on the North Shore runs west across the harbor, which makes the waterfront a real sunset location rather than a daytime view. In June that window sits near 8pm and in October near 6pm — a difference of two hours that should shape when your ceremony starts, not be discovered afterwards.
