The Session

Manisha and Todd
on the Skylands grounds

Manisha and Todd spent their engagement session on the grounds of Skylands Manor, the Tudor Revival manor at 5 Morris Road in Ringwood, New Jersey. The manor sits inside the New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands, in Ringwood State Park, and the gardens around it give one session a remarkable range: gray stone architecture, formal garden rooms, still water, and long tree-lined paths.

This was an engagement session, photographed outdoors on the grounds. George also photographed Manisha and Todd’s wedding, which took place at Park Château Estate & Gardens in East Brunswick. For Skylands, Manisha wore an emerald satin gown and Todd a black tuxedo, a pairing that holds its own against both the stone and the deep green of the gardens.

The approach is editorial direction plus real moments. George sets up the frame and guides the pose, then leaves room for the two of you to react to each other, and he brings lighting with intention so faces stay clear and warm against dark stone and deep shade.

Where we photographed on the grounds

The stone gatehouse. A small stone building with a slate roof, ivy on the walls and an arched wooden door. The honey-toned door inside the stone arch frames a couple standing close, and it works as a tight portrait or a full-length one.

The balustrade and the lily pool. A carved stone balustrade above a curved stone wall, with a long pool of water lilies at its foot. It suits a relaxed portrait leaning on the rail, or a wider frame with the water in front.

The fountain garden. A wall fountain between two stone pillars topped with planted urns, with a wrought-iron railing and the garden beyond. The symmetry makes it a natural place for a dip or a dance pose.

Tree-lined paths and open lawns. Stone paths under a canopy of trees and wide lawns edged with old trees give the session a softer, walking feel between the architectural frames.

The manor facade. The Tudor stone front of the manor, with its leaded windows, arched entrance and lanterns, is the closing frame. Photographed late in the day, with the couple lit against the stone, it has a cinematic, timeless feel.

Permits and planning

The New Jersey Botanical Garden states that a permit is required for professional photography and photo shoots, arranged through Ringwood State Park at (973) 962-2240. Rules and fees are set by the park and can change, so confirm current requirements directly before the session. Knowing those rules ahead of time is part of the job.

The grounds are large, so pick three or four settings in advance rather than sampling everything on the day. If you are planning an outfit change, allow time for the walk back to the car.
