Brooklyn is home

George Pompilio is a Brooklyn wedding photographer in the most literal sense: the studio is on Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay, and the borough is where he lives and works. When couples want New York in their photographs, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, and the skyline across the East River, this is where he brings them.

Brooklyn has far fewer traditional wedding venues than New Jersey or Long Island, so many Brooklyn couples hold the celebration elsewhere and bring the portraits home. Brooklyn Bridge Park and DUMBO are where George photographs many of his Portrait Experience sessions, and where some of his most recognized night portraits were made.

Brooklyn Bridge Park & DUMBO, the way George shoots it

A carousel in a glass pavilion, cobblestone streets between two bridges, and the Manhattan skyline across the water, all within a short walk of each other. Here are three of the looks it gives a session.

Jane’s Carousel

The carousel after dark

Jane’s Carousel sits in a glass pavilion on the water, and once the sun goes down its lights become the whole frame. Lit with off-camera flash, the couple holds their own against the glow instead of turning into silhouettes.

It is the look most couples ask for by name, and a good reason to plan a Brooklyn session to run past sunset.

The waterfront

The skyline at sunset

From the DUMBO waterfront you get the Brooklyn Bridge and Lower Manhattan in a single frame. The sun sets behind the skyline, which makes the sky spectacular and leaves the couple backlit. Flash is what puts the light back on your faces without losing the sky.

A bold gown earns its place here. Against the rocks, the water, and the city, color reads from across the frame.

Wedding-day portraits in DUMBO

A wedding gown on DUMBO’s cobblestones, a vintage car, and the skyline over the treeline: Brooklyn gives bridal portraits a sense of place that a banquet-hall garden cannot.

If your getting-ready location, ceremony, or reception is close enough, a portrait stop here can be built into the day. George plans the timeline around traffic, the bridges, and where the light will be when you arrive.

Permits, parking, and the rest of George’s favorite portrait locations are in his photo locations guide.

Portrait Locations

Where the pictures
happen in Brooklyn.

Jane’s Carousel

The restored carousel in its glass pavilion at Brooklyn Bridge Park. At its best after dark, when the lights carry the frame and off-camera flash keeps the two of you from disappearing into silhouette.

Washington Street

The cobblestone view of the Manhattan Bridge framed by brick warehouses, and the most recognizable street in DUMBO. It is also the busiest, so the strongest frames come early in the morning or once the light goes blue.

The DUMBO waterfront

Rocks, water, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Lower Manhattan in one frame. The sun sets behind the skyline, so this is a sunset location that rewards flash.

Under the Brooklyn Bridge

Brick arches, old warehouses, and the bridge towers lit from below at night. Moody and architectural, and a natural walk from the carousel to the water.

Planning Notes

Planning portraits
in Brooklyn.

Permits come down to equipment. At Brooklyn Bridge Park, engagement and wedding photos need no permit and no fee if your group is under 20 people and the photographer uses strictly handheld equipment. Once light stands or tripods come out, which the lit night portraits on this page require, a park permit is needed. Those permits are issued for weekdays only and applied for at least two business days ahead. Drones are banned entirely. In plain terms: a natural-light session is free on any day, and a dramatically lit session needs a weekday date and a permit. George tells you which one your vision calls for and handles the logistics.

Timing beats the crowds. DUMBO is one of the most photographed neighborhoods in the city. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends, and the blue hour after sunset clears the streets and brings the bridge lights on.

Plan for parking and the bridges. Parking near the park is limited, so build in time to arrive, park, and walk. If you are coming from New Jersey, Long Island, or Staten Island, a bridge or tunnel can add thirty to sixty minutes on a weekend. George’s wedding-day transportation guide covers how to buffer for it.

Dress for the city. Brooklyn suits formal looks: black tie, a long gown, a bold color against the skyline. The engagement session guide covers wardrobe in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you based in Brooklyn?

Yes. George Pompilio Photography is based at 1317 Avenue Z in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. George photographs weddings across New Jersey, Long Island, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and greater New York City.

Where do you photograph engagement sessions in Brooklyn?

Most Brooklyn sessions happen in Brooklyn Bridge Park and DUMBO: Jane’s Carousel, Washington Street and the Manhattan Bridge, the waterfront with the Lower Manhattan skyline, and the streets beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. They are all within walking distance, so one session can cover several looks.

Do we need a permit for photos at Brooklyn Bridge Park?

Not for a natural-light session. Engagement and wedding photos need no permit and no fee if your group is under 20 people and the photographer uses strictly handheld equipment. Light stands or tripods, which the lit night portraits require, need a park permit, issued for weekdays only and applied for at least two business days ahead. Drones are banned. Rules can change, so George confirms the current requirements before your session.

When is the best time for DUMBO photos?

Sunset into blue hour. The sun sets behind the Manhattan skyline, so the sky is at its best, the crowds thin out, and the bridges and the carousel light up. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends.

Can we take wedding-day portraits in DUMBO?

Yes, if the day’s locations allow the travel time. George builds the timeline around the drive, parking, and the light, so a Brooklyn portrait stop adds to the day rather than rushing it.

How much does a Brooklyn wedding photographer cost?

Wedding collections start at $3,499, and most couples invest between $3,999 and $4,999. Every couple who books their wedding with George begins with the Portrait Experience, and Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the most popular places to do it.

How far in advance should we book?

As early as you can. George photographs one wedding per day. 2027 is 90% booked, and 2028 dates are now open.
