A garden celebration in Rockleigh, where classic estate elegance meets dramatic evening light and a dance floor that never slowed down.

From the first quiet moments of getting ready to the last song of the night, Zahra and Joe’s day at The Rockleigh was elegant, emotional, and full of joy. This Bergen County estate is known for its manicured gardens, the fountain courtyard, and ballrooms that come alive in the evening. Knowing the venue means being in the right place before each of those moments arrives, not chasing them after.

Their photographs carry what George brings to every wedding: real, unscripted moments as they happen, editorial portraits shaped with care, and warm, creative frames that become art on the wall. You can read more about how a day like this comes together on The Approach.

Twelve acres, and the problem that creates

The Rockleigh is one of Bergen County’s grandest venues — twelve acres of manicured gardens, Italian fountains, a marble staircase in the lobby, garden chapels, and two distinct ballrooms under crystal chandeliers. It gives a wedding more usable settings than almost any property in the region.

Which is exactly the risk. More settings than a portrait block can cover well means the temptation is to sample all of them and photograph none of them properly. The better plan is to pick three in advance — a garden, the staircase, and one ballroom — and work them deliberately.

The fountain and the veil

The garden fountains are the signature setting here, and they suit a long veil more than almost anywhere else on this list. A cathedral-length veil catching air in front of stone and water is the frame couples print largest, and it takes wind, timing and a light in the right place rather than luck.

If you are still deciding on veil length, that decision has more effect on your portraits than most dress decisions do — here is why.

Where the day tends to run tight

Rockleigh sits at the very top of Bergen County against the New York line, about thirty minutes from Manhattan but considerably longer from central and southern New Jersey. Guest travel splits in two directions, and the ceremony start should account for whichever way your list leans rather than splitting the difference.

The gardens are also seasonal in a way the interiors are not. Courtyard and Tuscan Garden portraits are at their best from late spring through October; in winter the marble staircase and ballrooms carry the gallery. Both are good outcomes, but they look different, so plan for the one you are actually getting.

In Their Own Words

Zahra & Joe’s Wedding Experience at The Rockleigh

Zahra and Joe married at The Rockleigh in Rockleigh, New Jersey, exchanging vows in the garden chapel before the celebration moved inside for the evening. What they describe in the video is less about the photographs than about how the day felt to be inside of. Being able to relax into it, knowing somebody else was tracking the schedule and the light.

The Rockleigh asks a lot of a photographer: a chapel, fountains, a marble staircase and ballrooms that each light completely differently. Knowing the building in advance is what keeps a couple from having to think about any of it.
